Miles Chapel is an historic congregation founded in 1923. Recent discoveries have connected our church with Miles Chapel CME Church 1866 in Ripley, TN. Somewhere around the turn of the century members from the church in Tennessee relocated to Paducah. Mother Ruth Moody partnered with these pioneers to start the Miles Chapel Church of Paducah.
In 1923 this group founded a church at our current location.

HISTORY
MILES CHAPEL PADUCAH CME CHURCH
OUR CHURCH HISTORY
Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal church had its beginnings in the early twenties. The Church was organized for the community to have a place to worship the Lord and serve Him only. Several families had moved to this community then known as the Mc Guire area. At the time there were only dirt roads, lights by oil lanterns and horse and buggies for travel. It was soon realized that there was no place to teach the children about the Greatness of God and His Word.
Sis. Ruth M. Moody a devout Christian Mother 1880-1969. In her early childhood she went to live with a minister, Rev. J.W. Bell, who was one of the pioneers of our Church. He pastored many churches in the connection, and was Editor of the Christian Index. While Rev. Bell was pastor of Thomas Chapel in Hickman, Kentucky, Sis. Moody married Rev. R.T. Moody a CME Pastor and Presiding Elder. They would settle in Paducah on North 32nd St.
She then joined St. James CME Church the oldest CME Church in Paducah. She was very unhappy that there was no Church in the community. With prayer and strong faith in God she sought out start the Miles Chapel CME Church.
In 1922, Sis. Moody called on children who were playing ball and other games in the community to gather for Sunday School. She promised the children if they would gather for Sunday School at her Grocery Store on Sunday mornings. She would bring the adults to watch and cheer their games in the afternoon. So she opened the doors of the grocery store for Sunday School. The Store was located at the corner of N. 32nd Street and Levin Avenue. Very soon they began to hold community Worship Services there.
The Congregation soon outgrew the space in the grocery store. Several ministers joined them and a brush arbor was constructed for services and Camp Meetings. Some of the ministers from the bush arbor days were Rev. John Elliot and Rev. Ware.
As time marched on the community members began to construct a wood-framed building here on Levin Avenue. The Church worshipped in the Sanderson School. In September 1929 the building was completed. Rev. J. S. Humphries was pastor of St. James and held service for this neighborhood Church in the afternoon. Brothers R. C. Carson, S. G. Goss, F. Stevens and J.C. Jones laid the cornerstone.
The Church was named for Bishop William Henry Miles. Bishop Miles was the first Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
For a period of time the CME Church sent several ministers to pastor this congregation. Rev. Mc Gee, Rev. Churchill, Rev. Sutton, Rev. Hodge and Rev. S.J. Smith.
As our history pressed forward there was a period when the Annual Conference did not send a minister to this church. The congregation then called on ministers from the community to help. With the help of the Lord the Church survived.
In 1960 Rev. J.J. Forbes was appointed Pastor. He would serve until 1974. During his ministry a parsonage was built on Harrison Street. Many improvements were made to the sanctuary and indoor bathrooms were installed. This connected the parsonage to the sanctuary.
At some point between 1974-1978 an addition was made to the parsonage and air conditioning were installed. These improvements were made in preparation to the host the District Conference.
From 1978-1981 Rev. J. R. Moody was Pastor. During his tenure, a new roof was put on the church, a kitchen range, a gas heater for the sanctuary, a new pulpit was constructed, new pews, organ and stained glass windows were added. A church bus was purchased during this time.
This was a wonderful time for the church. The church was bricked, glass doors and hand rails were added and a Church sign was erected. This gave the church a new look. The Members had a mind to work as did the ministers and friends of the church.
The work continued under the leadership of Rev. Roderick V. Thompson from 1981-1984. He was a lover of music and involved many young people in the Mass Choir. The number grew so large, that he changed the altar and made three choir stands. The communion table was purchased during this time. The group would travel to many of the local churches and out of town with their music. Miles Chapel hosted the District Conference during this time. It is noted that the opening night service was held at the City Fountain in front of City hall. Another Bathroom was added at this time.
Many other ministers were sent to Pastor Miles Chapel throughout the years. Through the hard- work of the laity many accomplishments were made. There have been ministers who have accepted their call at this church, as well. Rev. James T. Morris, Rev. Laverne Williams, Rev. K. L. Young and Rev. Eric Mc Kinney.
Our current minister is Pastor Benjamin Lewis; He began his ministry at Miles Chapel in July 2015. He is also the pastor of the Hills Chapel Crofton CME Church located 101 miles away near Hopkinsville, KY. Pastor Benjamin has been vital in reclaiming the young people of our community and involving them in the church. He is a musician and has sought to restore music as a part of our worship services. Technology has also been utilized under his leadership. We now have a church website and social media.
The faithful laity have remained dedicated to this neighborhood church during this pastorate. Bro. Otis Mc Kinney, Bro. Jim Terry, Bro. Andrew Mason, Sis. Paula Moore, Sis. Karen Wilson and Sis. Teresa Wilkins. Several youth and children were baptized in 2015. The members have also made improvements to the building. A new floor in the vestibule was installed. The exterior trim work was painted. Various building repairs have been completed.
In celebrating our heritage, we have to be thankful for Sis. Ruth Moody, who served as Sunday School Superintendent for 40 years. We must be thankful for those early children who were encouraged to get involved. In recent years it has been suggested a link between the Miles Chapel CME Church in Ripley, TN (1870) Several persons from this congregation who had relocated to Paducah around the turn of the century may likely be some of those early members. We thank God for the early pioneers, community leaders, ministers and the faithful members who Held on to God’s Unchanging Hand and passed this Edifice with all of its assets to our present generation. We shall forever hold the torch high and keep faith in God.
